Shooting with Nikon 14-24 and Haida filter system in Spain

Image
Gueirua beach, Santa Marina shot with Nikon D800, Nikkor 14-24 F2.8 lens, Haida filter system with Haida ND 3.0 and Haida GND 0.6 soft Some time ago I was reviewing the Haida system for my Nikon 14-24 lens. A wonderful lens, but so heavy and bulky that is uncomfortable to carry it around in the bag for a whole day, therefore I leave it at home more frequent than not during my shooting trips. For this trip in Spain, I decided that my shoulders need to roughen up and Carmen needs a wider lens than her 20mm prime, therefore I was using the 14-24mm quite intensively; as a result Haida system came into play a lot. This time in real shooting conditions: sunrises, sunsets, close by the water, in growing tides and rough waves. San Juan de Gaztelugatze, Bakio  shot with Nikon D800, Nikkor 14-24 F2.8 lens, Haida filter system with Haida ND 3.0 and Haida GND 0.6 soft So how my conclusions evolved ? First of all using this kind of filter system is...

North of Spain trip - part 2

Image
The second part of our north of Spain trip moved a bit to the west in the amazing Asturias. A hidden gem along the coast, with very photogenic beaches, some great mountains ( we didn’t explore those as we focused mostly on the coastline) and great food. After a long train ride from Santander, we ended up in Naves, a small village close to Llanes. It felt and smelt like countryside: horses , cows, fermented grass covered in plastic( to feed the animals during winter), algae collected from the sea to be used probably as natural fertilizers. The hotel was unexpectedly good (Hotel Villa Maron a 19th century house, tastefully renovated and with everything that you need for a comfortable stay). The photographic highlight of the area is Castro de las Gaviotas, a beautiful arch in the water, just off the coast, that offers quite few composition choices. One of them, from Playa de la Huelga, gives very nice elements to play with, like the small Rio de San Cecill...

North of Spain trip - part 1

Image
We are back from a great trip in the Northern part of Spain. There were 2 very intense weeks, with a lot of time spent in the trains and buses, with very good weather ( a bit too warm for this time of year) and with surprisingly few other photographers on the way. Our journey started in Bilbao, continued on the Basque coast in Sopellana and Bakio. On the way to Asturias we spent one night in Santander and then we explored the Asturian coast in Naves, Novellana, Villademoros and Luarca.  A few thoughts, while still fresh: the north of Spain is an area of exquisite beauty, where nature can be admired at its best. A blend of stunning beaches, tremendous shapes carved by the water during thousands of years, this area is an excellent location for an avid landscape photographer. On the other side, it is an area where non-spanish speaking travelers have difficulties communicating with locals and where infrastructure is really basic. It was not an extensive exploration by an...

Do you see the dragon or its just my mind?

Image
This is an image I shot last summer in Mallorca, in a colorful morning, right after sunrise. I wake up pretty early so I took my camera just to see the sunrise colors and the small city quite and without the hordes of tourists. The sunrise location was not so good as the sun was raising from below Formentor tops but that day, the clouds were nice , coming fast from the middle of the island to the sea. I wondered for some minutes but there was nothing really interesting to shoot. Suddenly the clouds were back lit by the sun and they were looking like a giant dragon. I took couple of quick shots. One minute later, they were spread on the sky due to marching with different speed. The dragon was gone. I haven’t processed the image last year and I almost forgot about it. Some other pictures popped up as more interesting, then other new images were shot. However yesterday, back from work, I had a strange thought about exactly this image. I was just watching some boring shapes...
